The Craft of Our Buttons: Why We Chose Corozo and Casein Over Plastic

When it comes to luxury menswear, every detail matters — not just in design, but in impact. At RAVEN ROCK, our commitment to sustainability and craftsmanship extends right down to the buttons on your polo, hoodie, or sweatshirt.

Why Buttons Matter More Than You Think

Buttons are often overlooked — small, functional, forgettable. But in reality, they represent the final touch that completes a garment. A well-chosen button speaks to quality. A sustainable one speaks to conscience.

We asked ourselves: Can we replace petroleum-based plastic with something better?
The answer led us to two remarkable natural materials: corozo and casein.

Corozo: The Ivory Nut of the Rainforest

Used on our upcoming white jersey polos, corozo is made from the nut of the Tagua palm, which grows wild in South America. When harvested, the nut is dried and polished into a hard, ivory-like material — making it biodegradable, durable, and beautiful.

  • Plastic-free and renewable

  • No need to cut down the tree — only the fallen nuts are used

  • Hand-finished by skilled British artisans through our partners at Courtney Buttons

Casein: A Button Made from Milk Protein

For our upcoming navy polos, we’ve chosen casein — a natural protein found in milk that can be transformed into a hard, horn-like material. It's been used in button-making for over a century, and is both elegant and low-impact.

  • Made in Britain using traditional techniques

  • Sleek, polished surface with a timeless finish

  • Fully biodegradable, unlike conventional resin buttons

Why We Refuse to Use Plastic

Fast fashion relies on cheap, plastic components that end up in landfill. But at RAVEN ROCK, we build garments to last — and decompose responsibly when their time is done.

Choosing corozo and casein isn’t just about looking good. It’s about aligning our materials with our values. Natural buttons complement our new traceable cotton, British manufacturing, and low-carbon ethos.

In short, they help us close the loop, responsibly.
